Dog Cup Cozy

I can’t believe it’s been a month since my last post!  The time sure got away from me.  My son is back from working in Saskatchewan, and there are boxes all over my house.  I am struggling to find a place to store all of the stuff he came back with.  Most of the time my little 1200 square foot house is plenty big enough, but it feels too small right now.

I’ve been playing around with this cup cozy pattern for a little while, I am trying to think of small things that may sell on Etsy and Handmade @ Amazon in the warmer months, and I think they may be a good fit for the craft fair this fall as well.  I think that a dog cup would be an adorable stocking stuffer.  It’s also a great way to use up scrap yarn.

If you prefer a printable PDF of the pattern, you can find one here in my Etsy store.

If you are interested in purchasing a cup cozy I have a few designs here.

What You Need

  • 5mm and 4 mm crochet hook
  • scrap cotton (pictured above) or acrylic yarn for the main color (MC)
  • 2 safety eyes
  • either a safety nose or black yarn to sew on a nose
  • darning needle

Stitches Used

  • ch – chain
  • slst – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • st – stitch
  • sc dec – single crochet decrease
  • sc3tog – sc 3 together (just like a single crochet decrease, but with 3 sc)

Important Tip

The chain 1 at the beginning of each row is not counted, and do not work in it.  Slip Stitch to the first half double crochet (or single crochet) in the round, and work the first stitch of that row in the same stitch as the chain.

Dog Cozy Crochet Pattern

Cozy

with MC and 5mm hook

ch 28, slst together to form a ring, making sure that it’s not twisted

Row 1- ch 1, HDC around, slst to 1st HDC (28)

Row 2-6 – Repeat Row 1 (28)

Row 7 – ch 1, sc around, slst to 1st sc (28)

fasten off, and bury ends

Ears – Make 2

with MC and 4mm hook

ch 10

Row 1 – 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 ch’s, HDC in 3 ch’s, dc, 4 dc in next, (working in back of st’s) 2 dc in next, HDC in next 3, sc in next 3, slst to 1st sc

Row 2 – ch 1, HDC in 8 st, 2 HDC in next 5 st, HDC in 7 st, 3 HDC in last st.

Fasten off, leaving 8″ to sew the ear onto the cozy.  Bury the end from starting the ear.

Muzzle

with MC chain 8

Row 1 – sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 5 st, 4 sc in next st, (working in back of st’s) sc in 5 st, 2 sc in next st, slst to 1st sc (18)

Row 2 – ch 1, sc in 2 st, sc3tog, sc in 2 st, 2 sc, 2 sc, sc in 2 st, 2 sc, sc, 2 sc, sc in next 2 st, 2 sc, 2 sc, slst to 1st sc (22)

Row 3 – ch 1, sc, sc dec, sc dec, sc, 2 sc, sc, 2 sc, sc in 2 st, 2 sc, sc in 4 st, 2 sc, sc in 2, 2 sc, sc, slst to 1st sc (26)

Row 4 – ch 1, sc in each around, slst to 1st sc.  Fasten off, leaving 18″ for sewing.

Now we need to assemble all of the parts.  First, I prefer to put the nose on to the muzzle, them sew the muzzle onto the cozy.  Then put on the safety eyes, last sew on the ears.  If I don’t do it in that order I can’t seem to center anything.

I hope you enjoy the dog cup cozy as much as I have.
